Atherton Town v Highfield AFC
Date: 2012-01-28

Report:
Last saturday saw Atherton Town Division 4 entertain Highfield Division 3 in the Quarter final of the Players Cup
Both teams were fully committed and served up a tremendous game of football
Highfied finally prevailed 4 - 3 after extra time
But it was a real nailbiter and the home side thought they were through to the Semi final when they scored with one minute of normal time remaining to lead 3-2. But Highfield had other ides's and from the resulting kick off Connor Smith beat three players and from the right side of the bos struck a magnificent shot which sailed over the keeper into the net - resulting in joyous scenes both on and off the pitch
What fantastic drama this game had and Atherton can hold their heads up high in defeat
But Highfield under 12's march on with Reebok dreams a real possibility

my thanks go to Steve and his coaches at Whelly, despite the weather they really pulled out the stops to get the game on.
The match was an evenly fought out game and there was some great football played by both sides. Brandlesholme took an early lead and then Whelly went into to half time leading.
The second half brought much of the same with Brandleshome edging past Whelly. Steve you have a great bunch of boys and i can see your team getting better and better, David Beckham would have been pround of the corners your boys were sending in!
Great addition to our group of games...! already looking forward to next year.
Heaton Vipers v Atherton Town

Report:
After a good start to the season Atherton town travelled for the second time in as many weeks to play Heaton Vipers a team we had never met before.Confidence was high in the lads as the game kicked off and straight away Atherton came out strong passing the ball about and getting it out to the wings and running towards the goal but strong defending from Heaton broke up the attack and gave them posession but again some hard tackling kept the ball mainly in the centre of the pitch with neithier goalkeeper having any shots to save. This went on for the first fifteen minutes when a good run down the middle by the Atherton centre forward was brought down just outside the area and the referee awarding a free kick.Big JACK took his time before he kicked the ball over everybodys head and in the back of the net 1-0 ATHERTON TOWN.The lead was short lived though as a cracking run down the wing from Heatons no12 saw go pass the defenders and turn towards goal a silly push by an Atherton player saw him hit the floor and a penalty was awarded and no complaints from us.The Heaton player stepped forward and BANG the ball was in the net nobody could have stopped that shot. 1-1 and the half time whistle went.A team talk was given and some fresh legs were brought on for the start of the second half as a couple of the Atherton lads were beginning to tire.Again same as the first half some great passing was being used by both teams but both defences were on their game and the goalkeepers had little to do.Then a pass from Athertons goalkeeper to the wing then quick pass to JOE saw him skip past a Heaton defender and a splendid kick from 20 yards saw the ball once again in the back of the goal and Atheron back in front 2-1.Things then went wrong for the away side.An attack from Heaton saw the ball fly in front of goal it came of the shin of a defender and our goalie instinctivly went down and grabbed the ball only for then the to give a free kick for a back pass which we thought was a little harsh. The spot kick was only 5yards from the goalline and the with everyone in the penalty area it was a mad scramble to clear it.It was eventually cleared but only to an Heaton player who kicked it towards goal with everyone just standing watching it dropped to another Heaton stricker who side footed into the net 2-2.Both teams knew the next goal could be the winner and with the clock ticking down nerves were beginning to show.An Heaton defender had the ball when coming under pressure he turned to face his own goal and passed back to his goalie who casually picked it up.SURELY this was a blatant back pass and a free kick must be awarded but NO the referee said goalkick which left alot of players and the crowd scratching their heads especially when we had been penalised for a much softer freekick was awarded against us for the same thing. This got the Atherton lads switched on and some tired legs suddenly got a burst of energy as Atherton looked up to get a result from the game and for a five minute spell went all out to get a winning goal but again some some fine defending by Heaton vipers stopped any clear shots finding the target for Atherton. With 2minutes left a great pass from a Atheron winger to his striker saw JAMES take the ball into Heatons goal area and a great low shot but the ball into the back of the net for what everbody thought must be the winner for only then the referee to blow his whistle and rule it offside, leaving most people bemused. The whistle blew for fulltime and looking back a draw was fair result. HEATON VIPERS 2-2 ATHERTON TOWN. A big thanks to dave and his team for what was a good game to watch. As for ATHERTON a good result against a strong and skillfull side that maybe last season we might hav come away with nothing to show for so it,s beginning to show how much all the team has improved. If we can cut out some tiny mistakes im sure our good run of form may long continue. Our next game is again against a new team to us and we have to expect all our games or going to be as hard as we have played today. WELL DONE EVEYBODY MOM-AJ

Report:
This was the game that the team, manager and parents thought would kick start the season for whelley, unfortunatley with 3 players crying off with illness prior to ko the game was always going to to be an uphill battle with 10 men.
The 1st half started slowly for Whelley it was only 4 good saves by the centre half playing in goal that kept Astley at bay, the inevitable hapened and Astley broke through to score,it was very short lived as Whelley struck back and then could have gone 2-1 up but missed the penalty, the rest of the half swung Astleys way, by half time Astley were convincingly 3-1 to the good.
The second half continued in the same vien with Astley taking a 5-1 lead thanks to some good play by the Astley striker and an even more great goal from 25yrs into the top corner. Whelley then suddenly came to life and with 18mins to go played the sort of passing game that took them to the cup final last year, constant pressure by the valient 10 men resulted in 2 more goals making it a more respecful 3-5 loss, despite having 10 men, missing a penalty, and hitting the woodwork 4 times it was not to be.
The efforts did not go amiss though as the oposing manager stated how lucky his team were to hang on, and even luckier to win against the 10 men.
Bromley Cross Stars Under 14's v Beechfield United Under 14'S
Date: 2011-10-02
Author: Keith Long
Report:
Following two successive defeats Beechfield United Under 15's Girls team re-discovered the winning formula thanks to a 4-0 win over Bromley Cross. The match was officially United's home fixture but it was reversed to their opponents ground. A determined Beechy team who produced some brilliant football.
United started the match with a 3-4-1 formation and they quickly found a good tempo on a decent size pitch. Shannon Smith and Chloe Sherrin worked tirelessly in midfield while defenders Rebecca Duff, Emily Johnson and Danielle Farrand were given plenty of opportunities to advance upfield with the ball. It was the latter who gave Beeechy the lead then sister Rachel got in on the act when she added the next two goals and almost helped herself to a hat-trick but another fine effort hit the post.
United's 3-0 half time lead was fully deserved and they looked even more determined as the second half developed hardly wasting possession as they gave the Bromley Cross defence a torrid time. A fine solo goal by Chloe Sherrin completed the scoring and after the final whistle Manager Dave Farrand and Coach Steve Smith voted Rebecca Duff as Player of the Match.

FC Bury Town 1 - Aspull Juniors U12s Yellows 5
Yellows Turn it around for a fine win
The under 12s Yellows returned to Bury for their second away encounter of the season this time to face FC Bury Town. On their arrival the heavens opened and a heavy downpour of what Peter Kay would describe as “that fine rain that soaks you through” combined with a decidedly lush pitch made it tough going for both sides, nevertheless the lads put in a great effort and an exciting match ensued.
Bury kicked off, and despite the horrible conditions the opening ten minutes were fast paced with chances at both ends and good play from both sides. Aspull forced two corners and Joe had a good shot just wide of the right hand upright, but Bury had their moments too and opened the scoring with a good break through the middle and the ball tucked home for 1-0.
Spurred on by the goal Town followed up with a good spell forcing a couple of corners and a fine save from Lewis but the yellow’s back line of Evan, Joe and Daniel stood up strong in defence and held firm. The Yellows then responded, Evan got a good throw through to Rob who forced a good save from Bury’s keeper, then on 17 minutes Joe hit a super shot from a tight angle on the right wing to find the left hand corner of the net and square things up at 1-1.
The Yellows now had the wind in their sails, Jack got a good cross into Rob who again forced a great block from Town’s keeper but seconds later he got his reward for a really good attacking stint when Joe put a good through ball into the box and with plenty to do Rob turned and shot putting Aspull 2-1 to the good.
Aspull continued to work hard and had the better of the late exchanges, Bury had a good break on 26 minutes and the shot blasted wide right was a lucky escape for the Yellows, who replied almost immediately, Tom putting a good ball into Sean, but his shot was agonisingly just wide. The hard work paid off however when, a couple of minutes from the end of the half, Daniel made a good break down the wing getting the ball to Joe, he got the ball into the box causing a scramble in the box and as the ball broke free Tom was on hand to hit the ball low and right to give the Cannels a 3-1 advantage at the half time break.
Aspull kicked off the second stanza and despite Bury now having the advantage of the slight slope, started strongly forcing further corners, and Matthew, on for the second half getting a good ball through to Joe whose shot was just wide left
Bury then responded with some strong pressure of their own, but the Yellows increased their lead ten minutes into the half when Joe was brought down on the right hand edge of the box. The resulting free kick was parried away and cleared for a throw which was launched in by Matthew causing an almighty goalmouth scramble and Robert was on hand to turn it in for 4-1.
Aspull continued to look dangerous but Bury, to their credit, never gave up and pressed to get something out of the game at one point forcing three corners and some stout defending from the Yellows.
Aspull effectively sealed it on 46 minutes with a superb strong run from Tom forcing his way through Town’s defence and launching the ball into the roof of the net to make it 5-1.
Despite some strong pressure at the end when Aspull took advantage of Bury having to throw caution to the wind this was how the scores ended.
An excellent all round performance from the Yellows giving them two wins from three. All credit to Bury who put in an excellent effort and made this a very entertaining game, it would probably be fair to say that, as with the Yellows last week the scoreline didn’t really do justice to how well they actually played.

Elton & Walshaw 4 - Aspull Juniors U12s Yellows 1
Yellows struggle in the Rain
The under 12s Yellows travelled to Bury to face Elton & Walshaw in their first away encounter of the season and despite great effort throughout the squad came up short against a well organised Tigons.
Aspull kicked off playing into the wind and had a good opening spell Joe Tom and Evan were strong in defence, Danny Jack and Joe provided good linkup play in the midfield and Sean and Robert were busy up front, but despite good attempts from Danny and Sean Aspull failed to turn this to their advantage,
It was a fairly fragmented game throughout with, to my count, seven free kicks and three penalties, two of the penalties going Aspull’s way in the first half but still they failed to take advantage, maybe that was an indication that it just wasn’t going to be their day.
In the last quarter of the half the heavens opened making things difficult for both teams and reducing my notes to an illegible mess but on 33 minutes Elton broke the deadlock with a quick through ball and a well taken chance. 1-0 was how the half finished.
Elton kicked off the second half, Aspull now with the wind at their backs and the weather eased, but despite some early pressure it was Elton who opened the second half scoring with a good run down the right and ball crossed in tucked into the left hand corner.
Aspull continued to work hard and press but Elton got their third from a penalty, despite a brave effort from Michael in the nets for the second half and it was clearly an uphill struggle from there.
Elton increased their lead to 4-0 from a well taken corner from the left but to their credit the Yellows never gave up and when Lewis hit a shot the keeper couldn’t hold Joe picked up the clearance and hit a good shot into the right hand corner to make it 4-1. Spurred on by the goal Aspull finished strongly but failed to add to their tally so that was how the game ended.
Full credit to Elton & Walshaw Tigons who were well organised and took their chances well. Aspull would feel that 4-1 didn’t reflect the effort they put in, having had some excellent passages of play, and had they been able to put away some of the chances that they created they could have got something out of the game. A disappointing first loss but plenty of good signs to build on over the coming weeks.

Report:
Having missed junior football , the season started today , we hosted Halshaw Moor .
The game started end to end , great counter attacks from both sets of lads , within a few minutes we was awarded a penalty , as i was attending to the injured player , i see the ball skyed over the cross bar , 0-0 , mid way through the 1st half Kyle received a lovely switch ball to strike in the corner of the net 1-0 Bury juniors .
The 1st half continued with mass pressure from Richards squad leaving our keeper with his work cut out and in all fairness was a well matched fixture , it was pleasing to see plenty of passing and moving from both sides .
Half time 1-0
With our team talks from both managers obviously had a big impact on the lads , both teams upped their game , this became a superb example of junior football within BBDJFL .
Again it was end to end on around 17 mins of the second half we was awarded a corner , a nice delivery from Josh found the head of Kyle who thumped it in the back of the net 2-0 Bury Juniors , with 13 mins plus stoppage time to go , the game was far from finished , Halshaw Moor piled on the pressure and regulary made us put our backs to the wall , we hung on there and was rewarded with a 2-0 win .
To summerise our opponents came and give us a very good game , the sportsmanship was exemplory and the coaching ethos they presented was simply brilliant , well done Richard and good luck for the rest of the season .

Aspull Juniors U12s Yellows 6 – Bromley Cross Scorpions 2
Yellows get off to a Flying Start
Well, once again a new season is upon us but the September rain wasn’t going to dampen the Yellows enthusiasm as they turned in a fine opening performance to give themselves the best possible start.
The Yellows entertained Bromley Cross Scorpions on a damp but warm morning at Aspull Moor and hit the ground running right from the outset. Right from the kick off Jack hit the bar after a goalmouth scramble caused by his own cross in from the right. The resulting goal kick was returned with interest and just two minutes into the game Jack shot from wide right to open the Yellow’s account.
Bromley Cross were on level terms on 6 minutes however when a bit of a mix up in the Aspull defence led to a goalmouth scramble and the ball turned in to square up the game at 1-1.
The Yellows almost restored their lead a couple of minutes later when Joe put a great ball though to Sean who forced an excellent save from Bromley’s Keeper, then in an end to end passage of play Tom had a good shot from distance blocked whilst at the other end a super ball in from the right was turned over the bar by Bromley when to be honest it looked easier to score, unlucky !
It was Aspull who broke the deadlock however when Joe got the ball through to Robert who did really well to get in a fine cross and was “rewarded” when the ball hit the Bromley Cross defender and turned into the net. Bad luck on the Bromley defender, not much he could do about it, but reward for Rob’s effort even if the goal couldn’t be credited to him.
The rest of the first half was pretty even although Bromley did come strong at the end with a shot just over the bar and, right at the death, with the Bromley striker through on goal Lewis came out of his net and bravely did enough to force the shot wide so 2-1 was how the half ended.
Michael took over in Goal for the second half with Matthew coming on in defence. Lewis now playing up front wasted no time getting in on the action getting a ball through to Jack who turned it in to put the Yellows 3-1 to the good.
Bromley replied with a spell of pressure forcing a good save from Mike from a free kick and then hitting the right hand upright but Aspull were able to soak up the pressure and then replied with a good spell of their own. It was Bromley who hit next however, slightly against the run of play with a solo breakaway effort from the left. One on one Michael made a brave effort to keep the ball out and got a hand to it but couldn’t hold on and the rebound was turned in by the Bromley striker for 3-2.
The Yellows were in no mood to let this one get away from them, and replied with their best spell of the game. Firstly, debutant Evan weighted a nice throw from the right in for Danny who blasted home low and hard into the left hand corner to restore the advantage to 4-2. Aspull then piled on the pressure Evan again fed Danny who put a good cross in but no-one could just get enough on to it to turn it in. Bromley got another break down the left but solid defending from Matthew denied them any reward, and Aspull again pressing hard forced corners on the left and then the right the second forcing a goalmouth melee with the ball finally coming out into Bromley’s net. One for the dubious goals committee this, but the lads were honest enough to say that the final touch came off a Bromley defender, unfortunate again, but you had to say a goal was coming.
Despite the 5-2 score line Bromley never gave up, and all credit to them for working hard right to the final whistle. Bromley had a couple of late chances forcing more work from Mike in the nets but it was Aspull who had the final word when Joe made a run down the right and turned the ball in from a really tight angle, a super goal to cap off a great performance by the lads.
A great opening result for the yellows, an exciting and most watchable game with great effort from both sets of players. Well done to all. Here’s hoping the boys can build on this as the season progresses.

The last game of the season for both sides, it really didn't matter about the result - both sets of lads just wanted to enjoy themselves today and so it proved.
Langworthy FC joined the season late on and have been a credit to the league and the division since arriving. They've played some good football with a great set of lads and officials but, most of all, they're a credit to the league in the attitude they approach their football.
As i say, the result today was not important but instead the manner in which the game was played was terrific, with a bit of fun along the way for both sets of lads.
Before today's game they gave our lads a round of applause and shook every one of our hands to say well done for, what has been, a good season for us. It was a great gesture from them and it is much appreciated by all at Bolton Wyresdale.
We've had a terrific season and the lads have enjoyed it thoroughly but this has only been made possible by the quality and attitude of the teams in our division. Thanks to all managers who have passed on their best regards and good luck next season!

Again much like other team reports that ive seen for this age group and again the score is irrelevant, I too wanted to voice an opinion that sportsmanship and the spirit of the game isnt dead in the under 7 league.
Jeff, his team and parents my thanks go out to you all for a really enjoyable game of football played between two very evenly matched teams, despite the home side being short of a couple of players Jeff very kindly borrowed two of his team, again it seems fair play and letting the kids enjoy themselves is alive and kicking !!
Pre-cursor for next year, i wanted to say thanks to all the team managers in section C under 7's at times the weather has tested us all and god knows its hard to manage the boys, get set up and train but thank you it was a pleasure traveling to you grounds and playing matches. GOOD LUCK FOR THE TOURNAMENTS AND SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR!

PLAYERS CUP FINAL Soccer 4 Kids 1-4 Whelley AJFC
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL - Hope you enjoyed your day - Savour these moments they do not happen very often!!!!!
This was a very entertaining and sporting cup final, however, the first half seemed to be dominated (understandably) by nerves, even the traveling faithful supporters were biting their nails! It was a fine day, although wet, played on a pitch that resembled the baize of a snooker table, completely level and lush green. The match started slowly with both defences dominating. The first chance went to Soccer, but Ben P claimed the header with ease. The half continued nervously with neither side finding any rhythm. A few more half chances came and went for both sides but none were capitalized on! Just before the half time whistle, Soccer nudged ahead, a long ball fooling the defence as it was flicked on over their heads, the forward nipped in to slip the ball past Ben P. Half Time 1-0 Soccer 4 Kids
A heroic performance from Whelley turned the game around in the second half. It started when George was brought down in the box, he then went on to calmly convert the penalty. 1-1. Whelley were inspired by the equalizer and found their touch, passing the ball around in their usual competent style and took control of the game. Luke put them ahead on 52 when he stole in on the far post to prod home, after the ball rebounded off the post from a Callum P left wing cross 1-2 Whelley. Then came the goal of the match when Ben L won the ball in centre mid-field and took it past two defenders before chipping a perfectly weighted cross into the box, were Callum J met it with a sweet bicycle kick volley which flew into the net from 14 yards. 1-3 Whelley.
The defence held firm as Soccer 4 Kids tried to claw their way back into the game, everyone working very hard for each other. The fourth goal was also a peach, created by another classic Whelley move, started on the left by Keiran. He fed the ball to Ben L, who slipped a neat pass to George, he then took it round a defender and rolled a slide rule pass to Luke who took a touch before smacking a thunderous rising drive into the roof of the net from 18 yards. 1-4 Whelley!
Well done all, Whelley AJFC Under 13's Players Cup Winners 2011! A well deserved victory. Unlucky Soccer 4 Kids - your boys are a credit to you.

Whelley Alexandra Royals v Hindley Town Hurricanes

Report:
The Hurricanes visited Rose Bridge High School in Wigan today to play another Wigan based team, Whelley Alexandra Royals. This was the first meeting this season between the 2 rival Wigan sides with the potential for both teams taking today's 3 points. It was a case of who wanted the points most!
The game started with the Hurricanes blowing strong right from the whistle with numerous attacks at Whelley's goal but the keeper played well and saved some very powerful shots but the Hurricanes maintained the momentum and eventually a lovely mid-field run through a spacious defense and a well targeted pass saw the ball landing at the feet of striker Aaron Brown who rocketed the ball passed the Whelley keeper giving the Hurricanes a much needed opener.
The rest of the first half saw the ball more or less staying in the centre of the pitch with mid-fielders from both teams trying desparately to claim control of the ball and by the time the half-time whistle blew the game remained at 0-1 for the Hurricanes.
The second half began as strong as the first had and again mid-field proved to be the key position for both teams. Whelley eventually managed to inch their way into the Hurricane area and a very powerful shot as a result of a corner slammed home Whelley's equaliser. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, Whelley appeared to have gathered their second wind and another run through a too spaced Hurricane defense found our keeper all alone and facing a head-on attack by 2 Whelley attackers who then shot the ball wide which found its way into the corner of the Hurricane net.
Despite going a goal down after leading the game, the Hurricanes stepped up to the mark and fought back and an excellent run by Aaron Brown once again saw him being the focus of the cheers from the crowd as he drove the ball home giving the Hurricanes the equaliser they deserved. This was followed by a lovely long cross to Ryan Connelly who picked up his speed taking the ball close to the Whelley net. Finding that he had out-run his team mates and the Whelley defense it was left to Ryan to put the ball away neatly into the net, once again taking the Hurricanes back into the lead.
Again, the game turned into a mid-field battle which unfortunately saw the Hurricane defense being drawn into the centre of the field leaving our goal area undefended for some of the time and a high pass over the heads of our players landed at the feet of a Whelley attacker with no-one to contest him who then shot yet another equaliser into the net just before the final whistle blew.
This was a fantastic game of football today from both teams which showed the true spirit of Junior League football. Well done to both sides!

As Soccer4 Kids were working there way round there opposition, Horwich wasn't giving up.The first goal went to soccer4 Kids as Josh (the striker) scored with a casual finish from a long ball.
The second goal was also to Soccer4 Kids as matty (the centre back) was knocked of his feet inside there penalty area. They were awarded with a penalty which was blasted into the bottom corner by Josh with his second goal in the game.
The half time whistle blew.
Horwich was here for a battle and that is what happened as they scored 3 consecutive goals.
Soccer4 Kids still put in challenges and it payed of as Josh scored his hatrick with a fantastic dip over the keeper. As we were all on the edge of our seats, Soccer4 Kids scored for the final time with a steamer from James (CAM) who belted the ball into the back of the net.

Today Atherton Town travelled to Heywood to play Bridge Eagles Fc in a game that saw atherton come away with a hard earned victory earlier in the season. The pitch was fine considering all the bad weather we have had lately. The game kicked off with atherton playing uphill as the pitch is on a slight slope.Atherton came out quick getting the ball into bridge,s half with some fine passing of the ball straight to our striker danny only to see some strong defending by bridge stopping a shot on goal.Bridge eagles were only playing with 1 up front but and they were playing the long ball straight to her and it took 2 atherton lads to stop her having a shot on goal. This was how it went for the first 15minutes with atherton passing the ball about as good as we have seen all season and it was with this that leon our left winger cut inside to place the ball in the bottom corner to make it 1-0 atherton.Bridge took their kickoff and went straight for goal but atherton kept a strong back line and quickly dealt with the threat. The game carried on like this for the next 5minutes with both teams attacking and defending with equal amounts. With 25minutes gone a mistimed challenge resulted in bridge having a free kick just outside the area,a really well struck shot saw the ball go over everyones head into the back of the goal to make it 1-1 at half time.Playing uphill first half did make the atherton players tire but playing downhill second half we played to our strengths and we came on strong and a cross from the left to aaron saw him turn a defender and put the ball in the net 2-1 atherton.Bridge battled upfeild passing the ball around but again atherton with fine tackling quickly counter attacked and a shot was fumbled by the keeper to leave james to sidekick the ball in the net,a right poachers goal 3-1 atherton.Bridge never gave up but the patched up defence off atherton were really up for it and did their job brilliantly making it hard for Bridge to get a clear shot on target. With 10 minutes left a mistake at the back of bridges defence gave james again to put the ball in the back of the net a copy of his first goal 4-1 atherton. The final whistle blew on what was a good game of football and it was a fine team effort from all the players off Atherton who with a couple of players missing and one getting their late (DODGY SATNAV) we played as we had all season.WELL DONE lads lets see if we can repeat it with our last 2 games of the season. Hindley Town Hurricanes 6 -3 Ladybridge Wanderers
A later start than usual today as Ladybridge Wanderers visited Kildare Street for their 2nd meet this season. The 2 teams met back in mid-September.
The game started well with both teams passing well and it was Ladybridge who opened up the score with a lovely shot sent into the corner of the Hurricane net. Pushing forward, the Hurricanes stepped up the attack and an attempt at the Ladybridge goal by Aaron Brown saw the ball being sent back into play as it hit the post only to be picked up by Kieran Taylor who put the ball away to equalize for the Hurricanes. Minutes later, Kieran Taylor sent a fantastic header claiming another goal for the Hurricanes taking them where they like to be… in the lead, and as the half time whistle blew the Hurricanes left the pitch knowing they had to dig hard in the second half against a very committed Ladybridge squad.
Within seconds of the 2nd half starting, Ladybridge managed to claim another equalizer but the Hurricanes then found themselves claiming a corner and an uncharacteristic short corner from Liam Taylor saw Ethan Fordham turning with the ball and planting it firmly into the Ladybridge net. Another shot at the goal, this time from Liam Taylor saw the ball hitting the post but it was positioned just enough to send the ball into the net giving the Hurricanes a more comfortable 2-goal lead. The next goal demonstrated how well the Hurricanes have gelled as a team and a wide shot at the net from Kieran Taylor was neatly steered into the back of the net by Ethan Fordham. Once again stepping up their game, Ladybridge fought hard to make a come-back with some powerful shots being taken which sent the ball continuously into the Hurricane area but our defenders gave a superb performance and cleared the ball for much of the time. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, a break in the now tiring defense allowed Ladybridge to pull back another goal only to be answered by a dramatic and somewhat enthusiastic attempt by Ethan Fordham as he fired a high long-range ball which flew perfectly over the Ladybridge keeper’s head and into the net to bring the scoring to an end at full time.
An excellent game of true-grit football today from both teams which put both attackers and defenders from both teams through their paces – it was a pleasure to watch.

This was the second meeting of the season between Atherton Town and Elton And Walshaw Tigons with Atherton hoping to carry on with their winning run of games. The weather and pitch were perfect for a change as the game began.Atherton went straight on the attack with some fine passing between the wingers to set up a chance for striker danny to miskick and sent the ball wide. For the first ten minutes the ball was stuck in Eltons half with hardly any problems for Athertons defence to deal with.Athertons attacking line kept the pressure up with shot after shot being fired at Eltons net but they could still not find that poening goal.Fifteen gone and Atherton made a substituion and boy did it pay off.Two minutes after coming on a fine one two between the two strikers leon put the ball in the net 1-0 Atherton.Straight from the restart Atherton regained posession and went on the attack but some fine goalkeeping kept the ball out.Five minutes of the half left and a cracking pass through the middle set up Aaron who fired a shot pass the keeper the ball seemingly rolling into an empty net but from nowere Leon ran into the goalline and sided the ball into the net to make certain it went in.Honestly the goal should have been Aaron,s as it was certainly going in but credit to Leon he used his brain and made sure it did so good work both of you.Second half and Atherton looked like they were in total control with Elton barely getting into Athertons side of the pitch but Elton seemed to grow stronger and with nothing to lose they went with three up front on an all out attack. This worked as they put Athertons defense to the test with a couple of good shots. The game opened up with both teams tackling well and both keepers being kept on their toes. With ten minutes to go a mistake at the back led to Elton pulling one back to make it 2-1 Atherton. It was a heart stopping last ten minutes for Atherton to hang on to their lead and the final whistle could not come quick enough. This was a really good clean game of football to watch and was a credit to both sides.Atherton should hav finished the game off in the first half with all those missed chances but it was really good to see them make them in the first place with all the lads playing their part in the game.A big thanks to SUE and the Elton players who never gave up and played some fine football to make it a great game to watch.Good game Atherton but we have to put our chances away as they could cost us in the future but overall WELL DONE . mom-DANNY O'CONNER big thanks to rob+joe

A first match for the Braves since Nov 13, saw us travel to Hindley in a game that may have been called off due to the rain.
In the 1st minute, Hindley’s keeper saved and held on well from Tez’s free kick.
Danny in goal saved a 1 on 1 after 4 mins but on 5 Hindley took the lead following a quick throw as we were caught napping. Danny saved the 1st effort but the right winger sneaked in at the far post for 1-0.
On 14 mins Hindley had another chance but shot wide. On 22 mins their keeper again saved and held on well from Tez’s 2nd shot of the game.
HSM drew level on 25 mins when Luke hesitated and the chance went begging as Hindley cleared but Danny Mort hit a well struck shot from 15 yards which the keeper could only touch in to the net.
A final chance of note in the 1st half fell to Luke on 30 mins but he never hit it hard enough.
Half time 1-1 and the game was very well balanced.
After 8 mins of the re-start a Danny free kick was once again saved and well held by Hindley’s keeper.
On 17 minutes, the goal of the game and possibly the season. Danny Mort picked the ball up on the edge of his own area and ran the full length of the field, evading a couple of challenges before hitting a well hit shot into the roof of the net from 6 yards out-a great run.
Hindley drew level on 35 mins as Danny C rushed out of his area when he may have been better staying and missed it, Hindley winger found the net from a tight angle for 2-2.
Hindley got a winner 3 mins into 5 mins injury time but I never saw it as I was waiting for the ambulance to come and pick up Lewis who had fallen very heavily on his back after 15 mins of the 2nd half. Thankfully he is OK and the x-rays showed nothing serious, just severe bruising.
A dis-appointing end to an entertaining game and we deserved something from it.
Thanks to Pete and Hindley for getting the game on and for their concern for our player.

HSM Braves unbeaten run continues-11 weeks without a game so 11 weeks without losing! Things are getting ridiculous now, apart from obvious non-game days, Xmas Day and New Years Day, we haven’t played since Nov 13th and whilst other teams may be on a worse (or is that better run?), it is getting depressing for players and managers alike and maintaining a child’s interest is getting more difficult.
I never thought I’d say football should be a summer sport but we really need to consider what is best for our children as our winters are definitely changing. According to my records, weeks missed in the last few seasons are:-
10-11 last played 13.11.10 next game ???????
09-10 last played 31.10.09 next game 23.1.10
08-09 last played 29.11.08 next game 17.1.09
07-08 last played 16.11.07 next game 9.2.08
06-07 last played 2.12.06 next game 27.1.07
05-06 last played 3.12.05 next game 14.1.06
04-05 last played 11.12.04 next game 15.1.05
Obviously there are lots of implications for moving to a spring/summer league of perhaps March to June, break for school holidays Jul/Aug and continue Sep to Nov., things such as pitches used more if adults football doesn’t change, players, officials and other volunteers having other interests (cricket to name 1) but before we dismiss the idea totally, is it not worth serious consideration?
Already this season, we have been told that referees are quitting as they get Saturday jobs as games being called off is affecting their income, surely a season as above would have far less games being called off?
Another consideration is playing on better pitches (hopefully) would assist technical improvement which is what the FA keep banging on about.
Hopefully next week I can submit a proper match report and I wouldn’t care if we get beat 10 nil, at least the kids will have played.

Today Atheron Town travelled to Darcy Lever on a cold morning wandering if they could keep their recent good form going.A minutes silence was observed by both teams and parents for the late great Nat Lofthouse and then the game began.Darcy kicked off and were straight on the the attack passing the ball about but Atherton defence were strong and quickly broke down the attack. For the first 15 minutes the ball was going up and down the pitch with both teams having equal posession but no clear shots on target. Then with 20 minutes gone a Darcy Lever player shot from just inside the half way line to put the ball in the back of the Atherton goal.1-0 Darcy Lever.A substituion by Atherton just after the kick off paid off and some good one two passing and a fine finish by cammeron put Atherton level with the half time whistle being blown.During half time Darcy lost a player and had no subs but this did not weaken them as 5 minutes gone slack marking by the Atherton defence let a Darcy player slip behind them and a ball over the top made it a one on one with the goalie and bang 2-1to DARCY LEVER.This woke Atherton up and with an extra man they began to show what they could do.With 10 minutes gone a shot from distance by jack levelled the scoreline 2-2.Atherton were now going for it and shortly after a third was scored by ben to make it 3-2 to Atherton.Thinking now they could get the win Atherton came on strong but some excellent goalkeeping by the Darcy player kept the ball out with just 10 minutes to play. All credit to Darcy they never gave up and were still playing good football but on a break Atherton got a high ball into the goal area and a superbed header by Athertons smallest player leon resulted in another goal 4-2 to Atherton.Soon after with Darcy players beginning to tire Atherton broke again and it was left to aaron with a one on one with the goalie to put the ball into the back off the net 5-2.The final whistle blew on what was a cracking game of football and all respect to Darcy Lever with a man down they really gave Atherton a scare.A good win for Atherton Town but we still have a few things to work on and stop some silly mistakes that could cost us in the future but overall a good performance by the lads. Match Date: Saturday 15th January 2011
Having met each other earlier in the season with a dramatic 6 – 6 draw, Moorside once again visited Kildare Street unable to play the match on their home ground because of pitch conditions. It was obvious that both teams wanted to prove who the better was as they both gave 100% throughout the game.
The 1st goal came from a superb cross off Ryan Connelly in the first 5 minutes as he sent the ball to Kieran Taylor who turned and sent the ball flying into the Moorside net. The Hurricanes then moved in and gave the Moorside defense and keeper a hard time as the ball was consistently fired at the net – the Moorside keeper gave a sterling performance showing determination not to let the ball in but eventually the pressure proved too much and an unfortunate fumble by their keeper saw Aaron Brown claiming the Hurricanes second goal.
Another relentless attack from the Hurricanes saw determined Liam Taylor driving home our 3rd goal and a well spotted opening in the Moorside defense saw Ethan Fordham proving what a powerful striker he can be as he sent a perfect goal clear into the net. Seconds before the whistle blew for half-time, Moorside drove hard into the Hurricanes half and managed to claim their first goal of the match.
Today saw an equal performance by the Hurricane’s attack and defense and some great saves by our keeper but standing out from the rest was Aaron Brown in attack and Cameron Moore in wing position in the first half.
The second half saw the Hurricanes trying hard to lift the score even further but the persistent Moorside keeper refused to let the goals in with some very applaudable saves being displayed throughout the second half. Eventually however, Kieran Taylor blasted an attempt at the goal which found its way into the net. The game ended with Moorside finding a clearing and claiming the last goal of the match.
This was an excellent game of football from both under 11’s teams who gave a strong challenge both ways but the Hurricanes proved to be the strongest on the day – well done Hurricanes!
